Exploring different methods of getting work in a bad economic slump – searching for work beyond the conventional adverts

It’s a fact that the present employment market is the most difficult in over seventy years, and neither is it likely to get any better in the next few years. In the news it was reported that more than 60 graduates are applying for every graduate level position, and matters aren’t a lot better for other types of jobs, either. Some job seekers may think that somebody has more chance of buying a winning lottery ticket than getting a job via the normal advertised jobs market. Therefore people need to experiment with alternative methods of gaining employment. These might vary from conventional self-employment, routes to employed posts via other ways than advertised jobs, or some of the new options to Work From Home presented by Internet Business.

It is estimated by specialists that only around 20% of all jobs are actually advertised, either in the printed press, via job agencies or the Online Jobs boards. And when you reflect on it, this is logical. Employment is the only example in which the person doing the buying does the advertising. If I want to buy a car, I don’t place a newspaper advert saying “car required, estate, blue or green, approximately £10,000”. I look at cars for sale in the motor pages of the local papers. Why is the employment market so different?

For this reason many organisations turn to headhunters. These are specialists who investigate potential candidates for the vacancy, who may not even be applying for jobs. However, if candidates have their Curriculum Vitae uploaded to the Web, they may well be offered an interview by the headhunters. Job seekers should also use their networks, asking friends and relations to listen out for any suitable openings.

Some consider the opportunity to Work From Home or work using their own transport in a number of ways. Some of such jobs are not very remunerative. One person I’ve heard of gets paid only £20 for placing one thousand birthday cards inside envelopes. I once got given the chance to work for myself as a delivery man. For thirty delivered letters a day, the pay was under what I’d earn for packing a thousand envelopes – out of which I would have to stump up for petrol and tax. Unsurprisingly I I decided not to take up this offer.

Nevertheless, there are many Online Jobs that do offer a worthwhile and lucrative opening. Examples include webmaster vacancies and work on improving a website’s Google ranking. Internet Business is a boom area, and you can get involved without leaving your house.

To work in this area, it is of course necessary to have the required knowledge. Candidates will need to undertake the commitment to put in time and finances, paying some money for a course in the technical aspects of the web. The time is now long gone when you could throw together a web site using an introductory manual on HTML. There now exist several additional systems used in the Web. Online Jobs are highly specialised, technical positions. It’s for this reason that experts who have acquired the required skillset can command high pay.

One unfortunate fact is that the longer somebody stays on the dole, the harder it’s going to be to get a job. They may become rusty in their skills and become dispirited. I have experienced the exasperation of sending applications to countless vacancies on the Online Jobs boards, without even receiving an acknowledgement, to say nothing of an interview. Because of this it’s so crucial to escape from the crowd applying for that 20% of vacancies that get advertised, and consider opportunities in other ways. The chance to Work From Home in the area of Internet Business has without doubt found for me a novel purpose despite the fact that I saw few ways out for me previously.
